What is an Essix Retainer and how do I care for it?Clear plastic retainers. These are regarded as more esthetically accepted, but are not expected to last as long term as a Hawley retainer. What is a Bonded Retainer, when is it recommended and how do I care for it?In specific situations the Orthodontist may prescribe a bonded or fixed wire retainer. Often these are used in patients that have a high chance of relapse due to pre orthodontic tooth positions. These retainers do pose extra considerations for hygiene, access challenges for flossing, and are expected to require maintenance at times to to breakage with normal wear and tear. These retainers are NOT a replacement for their removable retainer counterparts. If the Orthodontist recommends a bonded or fixed retainer for you, you will also be provided with a removable retainer that fits overtop, and it will come with the same wear expectations.
-
Why are retainers are important and how often do I wear them?Literature shows that lack of retainer wear results in relapse and tooth movement. The guidelines are to wear your retainers full time (22 hrs a day) for the first 6 months after your active treatment ends, then moving to night time wear (12 hrs) indefinitely is the only way to maintain your results over a lifetime. Failing to wear the retainers as prescribed will result in loss of alignment and tooth movement and can require additional orthodontic treatments to correct.
